How to Keep Your Keratin Safe This Summer
SMOOTHED Salon – San Diego
Summer is here, and we want to make sure your hair stays as smooth and manageable as the day you left the salon. A good rule of thumb: anything that’s bad for your virgin hair is also bad for your keratin-treated hair. Here’s what to watch out for this season:
☀️ 1. Sweat + Workouts
Excessive sweating from intense workouts can wear down your treatment faster. If you’re training hard or outdoors often, consider tying your hair up loosely and rinsing with water after workouts when possible.
🌊 2. Salt Water + Chlorine
Both ocean and pool water can strip the keratin from your hair. We’re not saying don’t live your life—we want you to swim and enjoy the season! Just be sure to rinse your hair immediately after swimming and use a leave-in conditioner or protective mask to create a barrier before diving in.
🎨 3. Summer Highlights? Read This.
If you’re planning to go lighter, always wait about two weeks after your highlights before coming in for your keratin treatment. Keratin can cause slight toner shift, especially on blondes or highlighted hair. Be prepared by keeping a purple mask on hand just in case some warmth is revealed.
💧 4. Stay Moisturized
Heat, sun, and UV exposure can dry hair out—keratin or not. Use sulfate-free shampoo and a weekly hydrating mask (we’ve got salon-grade ones we love—just ask us!).
Final Tip:
If you’re especially active or spend a lot of time in the water, don’t worry. You’re not a bad candidate for keratin—you just might need a fresh treatment a little more often than others. We’ve got you covered.
