Why We No Longer Work on Hair Treated Overseas
At SMOOTHED, our mission is to give you healthier, more manageable hair using only the safest, non-toxic keratin treatments on the market. Because of that, we’ve made an important update to our salon policy:
We will no longer perform keratin treatments on hair that has been previously treated in another country unless a waiver is signed.
Here’s why:
Over the past year, we’ve seen a pattern. Clients come to us after receiving “keratin treatments” in places like Israel, Turkey, or other parts of the Middle East, and while the results seem to last 9–12 months, the truth is:
Those are not keratin treatments — they’re chemical straighteners.
These international services often contain illegal levels of formaldehyde or other banned chemicals not approved for use in the U.S. under California Prop 65. And while the results may look sleek and long-lasting, they often leave the hair severely compromised underneath — overprocessed, dry, and brittle.
Our treatments are designed to last up to three months using safe, non-toxic formulas. We prioritize hair health over shortcuts.
So moving forward:
If you’ve had a keratin or smoothing treatment done outside the U.S. within the last five years, you must disclose it before your appointment.
We will only move forward with your treatment if you sign a waiver acknowledging that:
Your hair may respond differently
Results will not be as straight or long-lasting
Our treatments are legal, healthy, and safe
We do not use chemical straighteners of any kind
This is not about judgment — it’s about protecting your hair and being honest about expectations. We care too much about your hair’s long-term integrity to gamble with unknown chemical histories.
