Why is gray hair like this in the first place?
The science, briefly

A gray strand isn’t just your old hair without the color. It’s structurally a different strand.

  • The pigment is gone from inside it. Melanin granules used to occupy real space within the cortex. Without them, the inside of the strand is built differently — which is why grays often feel stiffer and spring back into their own shape rather than following the hair around them.
  • The cuticle sits rougher. A raised, uneven cuticle catches on neighboring strands and scatters light instead of reflecting it. That’s your frizz and your dullness, both from the same cause.
  • There’s less oil reaching it. Sebum production drops with age, so grays run drier at the surface than the rest of your head — and dry hair is rough hair.
  • They often grow in with a different shape. A strand that grows with a more irregular shape simply won’t lie the same way as the hair beside it.
Keratin addresses exactly those things. It fills where the strand is depleted and seals the cuticle flat — smoother surface, less catching, more shine, and a strand that finally behaves like its neighbors.
Can I still color my grays?
Yes — color after keratin, not before

Absolutely yes. You can color your grays and have keratin treatments. The order is what matters.

Do your color after your keratin. Keratin lifts artificial color — it doesn’t touch virgin hair, but it can shift a darker shade that’s been put on top of gray. Coloring afterward means your tone lands where you actually want it and stays there.

This is the single most common mistake we see. Color first and you’ll watch a fresh appointment shift on you. Keratin first, color second.
If you don’t color your grays, read this
A yellow cast is possible, and temporary

If your gray is virgin — never colored — expect some yellowing after your treatment. We’d rather tell you now than have it surprise you in the mirror.

It usually clears after one or two washes. A purple or no-yellow mask afterward helps it along, and we’d recommend having one at home before you come in.

The only way to avoid it entirely is working at very low heat — and at that temperature we risk the treatment not activating at all. A temporary cast that washes out beats a treatment that never worked.

Does it get better over time?
Considerably

Yes, and this is the part worth knowing before your first appointment.

The softening of gray texture is cumulative. One treatment makes a real difference. Consistent treatments are what get grays genuinely laying down and staying down.

If your grays are very coarse, judge the result over two or three treatments rather than one.
