Heat damage isn’t only dry, breaking ends. For a lot of our curly clients, it shows up as a pattern that just won’t come back.
Here’s what a keratin treatment does for it:Two Different Things
When most people hear heat damage, they picture dry, brittle hair that snaps. That happens. But heat can also change your curl pattern while your hair itself stays in great shape.
What Keratin Does About It
Four things you can expect from a keratin treatment on heat-damaged hair.
Open What You Need
This is one we see all the time. Your hair is soft, strong and in great shape — your curls just won’t come back the way they used to.
That’s pattern damage. Heat has changed the shape inside the hair strand without breaking it down, which is why it can feel so confusing.
Your curl lives in the protein structure deep inside each strand. High heat can permanently reset that structure into a straighter shape, while the outer layer stays smooth — so your hair still looks shiny and feels soft, but the curl can’t spring back. No amount of conditioning can undo it, and the hair may also feel like it’s lost some of its bounce.
Some straight naturals have both: a pattern that won’t return, plus dryness, brittleness and breakage.
Breakage can show up at the ends, or further up inside the hair. Comb attachments on blow dryers are a common cause — that’s heat and tension together, pulled through the hair over and over.
Straight and wavy hair takes heat damage too, usually from styling every day. It tends to show up as dryness, brittleness and ends that won’t hold their length.
Keratin can’t rebuild a pattern heat has already taken. What it can do is help you stop adding to it, so the hair you grow from here comes in healthier, and the heat-damaged pattern can grow out over time.
How far your curls come back depends on your hair and on what happens at home. Heat styling and tension styles remove curl faster than we can protect it.
