What It Actually Is

You’re styling several heads of hair at once

Multi-textured hair isn’t a curl pattern. It’s having more than one — and being left to put product and heat through all of them at the same time, in the same way, hoping they land somewhere close together.

It cuts across everything else your hair is. You can be blonde and multi-textured, gray and multi-textured. A lot of our mixed race clients have several distinct patterns across one head.

So you end up doing four different things to four different areas, every single time you wash your hair.

Type 1 or 2 on top, more of a 3 or 4 underneath

If your top layer has drastically less curl than the rest — possibly close to straight, with mostly frizz rather than pattern — while the hair underneath, especially near your nape, holds far more curl, we call that Irish curls.

It’s one of the most frustrating things to live with, because you’re effectively managing two heads of hair. And it’s the version of multi-texture we see most often.

Book under type 1 & 2. That’s the texture we’re working with, and it reserves the right amount of time. Point it out at your consultation so your Smoothologist can plan around it.

Keratin will never put curl back into your top layer. What we can do is stretch and relax the curl underneath so the two layers sit closer together — and your hair finally reads as one head of hair instead of two.
Do I have multi-textured hair?
If any of this sounds familiar, probably
  • Wearing it curly takes real time, effort and a lot of product.
  • Wearing it straight takes real time, effort and a lot of heat.
  • Some areas curl beautifully and others just frizz.
  • Your nape behaves nothing like your crown.
  • You’ve never quite known which curl type you are.
We call it in-between hair. Not curly enough to wear curly without a fight, not straight enough to wear straight without one either.
What keratin can and can’t do here
The honest version

We can never put curl back in. That’s the limit, and it doesn’t move. If part of your hair has lost its pattern, nothing we do brings it back.

What we can do is relax the curl in the tighter areas to bring them closer to the looser ones. That’s how you get a more uniform wave or curl across your whole head instead of three competing ones.

We can’t guarantee it. At the end of the day your curls are going to do what they do. What we promise is that we’ll take every texture on your head into account and build the treatment around unifying them — if that’s your goal.
Why custom matters so much here
One formula cannot suit four textures

There is no single formula that suits four different textures. A standard treatment applied evenly across multi-textured hair gets you an even result on hair that was never even to begin with — which leaves you exactly where you started.

Your Smoothologist works out where each texture sits, how tight it is, and how much each area needs. Different parts of your head get treated differently on purpose.

That’s the whole reason we do custom keratin rather than one formula for everybody.

Does it get better over time?
Considerably

Yes. Each treatment builds on the last, and each one teaches your Smoothologist more about how your specific textures respond.

The first appointment gets your textures closer together. By the second and third, we know exactly where your hair needs more and where it needs less — and that’s when unification really lands.

We can’t promise you one perfect texture

These are smoothing treatments. They are designed to alter the pattern of your hair, and no one can honestly promise you that every area of your head will land in the same place.

What we can promise is that every one of us is deeply trained in the method of Smoothologie — gently softening and smoothing frizz, adding real manageability, and keeping your natural texture and the integrity of your hair intact. We will take every texture on your head into account and build the treatment around unifying them.

This is still a chemical service, and it still carries risk. That part we won’t dress up.

But you’re taking that risk with people who genuinely care about your texture — and who will do everything in their power to protect it.
