Choose Your Hair Type
Your curl pattern and your thickness. It sets how much time we reserve, and it doesn’t change what you pay.

What do the five options mean?
Type 1 & 2 · Fine to Medium. Your ponytail measures about a half dollar across (1¼ inches) or less. Blow-drying takes under 30 minutes.
Type 1 & 2 · Thick to Extra Thick. Your ponytail is wider than a half dollar. Blow-drying takes 45 minutes or more, if you do it at all.
Type 3 & 4 · Fine to Medium. Wash day is done inside an hour. A palmful of conditioner covers it.
Type 3 & 4 · Thick to Extra Thick. Wash day is a half-day project. You go through conditioner fast.
Booking for a child is its own appointment, ages 7 to 15. No texture or curl pattern to choose.
Which curl pattern am I?
Find the closest match. If you’re between two categories, pick the tighter one — it puts you with someone scheduled for the more demanding version of your hair.
Type 1 & 2 runs from poker straight through to loose waves and soft S-bends.
Type 3 & 4 runs from defined ringlets through to tight coils and zig-zag patterns.
How do I measure my thickness?
Straight and wavy. Gather your hair into a ponytail and look at its width where the elastic sits. Compare that to a half dollar, about an inch and a quarter across.
Curly and coily. Don’t measure a ponytail — curl adds volume that isn’t extra hair. Go by your wash day instead.
Most people underestimate either way. If stylists comment on how much hair you have, you’re thick.
Why does this matter?
It decides how much time we reserve for you, so nobody is rushing your service.
It does not change your price. That depends only on which Smoothologist you book, which is the next step.
I’d rather ask first
Our free virtual consult is a group call on Google Meet, usually thirty minutes to an hour, and it isn’t required in order to book.
Your camera is optional — you only need it on if you want us to see your hair. All times are Pacific.
